Hey Eyjafjallajökull, enough already!
Posted by: SamanthaS at 12:25PM EST on April 19, 2010

Man, this volcanic ash cloud out of Iceland (known as Eyjafjallajökull - good luck trying to pronounce that) is really messing things up. I read report after report of folks stuck in airports, sleeping on the floor, out of money and unable to get home to work because they can't catch their return flight. The airline industry is losing gobs of money each day flights remain grounded. Britain's general election on May 6 could be affected, with fewer Britons home to vote. President Obama even had to cancel his overseas trip to Poland, for the funeral of the country's president. Nature sure is unpredictable, and in this case, really inconvenient.

So the next time I feel my daily routine disrupted, I'll remind myself it could be a whole lot worse. I could be eating stale crackers in a European airport with dirty clothes on and no money in my pockets.

When it's NOT okay to bring your kid to work
Posted by: SamanthaS at 12:03PM EST on March 4, 2010

As you've probably heard on the national news this week, the FAA is investigating a case involving a JFK air traffic controller who brought two children into the tower last month. Tower tours to family members is permitted; however, the problem is that one of the children gave instructions to pilots from the air traffic control tower. Now the air traffic controller/parent in question has been put on administrative leave during the investigation. Read the full story here. To hear the audio of the boy's directions to the pilots, click here.

Air traffic controllers have an important responsibility to keep pilots and passengers safe for takeoff and landing. And bringing kids to that kind of work probably isn't the most appropriate thing to do. So I'm wondering, what other professions should you NOT bring your kids to? Leave your comments below.

Laptop use no excuse
Posted by: SamanthaS at 6:37PM EST on October 26, 2009
Does anyone else think it's odd the two Northwest Airlines pilots said they missed the runway in Minneapolis by 150 miles because they were working on their laptops? Read the story here. They say they didn't fall asleep, but they admit they weren't listening to radio traffic either. That's pretty scary! Those on board that evening were really lucky. Glad they landed safely, but it sure makes you wonder what was going on up there...

I think in my next life, I want to be a pilot
Posted by: SamanthaS at 11:56AM EST on August 4, 2009
Aviation fascinates me. I love to fly commercially and I think it would be so exciting to be behind the controls of a plane. So I was more than happy to tag along with Sam, the Journal's videographer, to media day at the 185th Air Refueling Wing last Friday. They were giving members of the media a sneak peak of the air show which was scheduled for last Saturday and Sunday. There were a number of planes, both old and new, small and large, to check out. A few of the planes even demonstrated some of the air acrobatics they would perform for the weekend. Here are a few photos I snapped:
